EARLY RECORDS

Friday I got a spontaneous call from 1 of my musical heros,Don Blackman, who said “are you ready to go on air in 5 minutes” . I was surprised and thrilled as I had already been listening to his new weekly internet radio station and play his dancefloor hits regularly in my sets .Don is a prolific writer, singer, key player, and his down to earth nature keeps him in touch with the hundreds of talented people  he’s worked with ,some of whom were guests in the same show such as  Mr. Bashiri Johnson, well known for being Michael Jackson’s percussionist ,as well as Film director, poet, cool cat, Melvan Van Peebles ( catch his new act named “laxative” @ Zebulon) ,Omar Hakim, drummer for Sting,Trio of Oz,etc….check him out.

i loved”planet of the apes” movies as a kid, then 1 day i overheard “guerilla warfare” mentioned on the news & that was confusing for a sec

If the london riots were  because of what this man was saying , i’d agree with them, but they clearly aren’t , as most of them are white according to the videos I’ve seen on you tube ( not as  TV reports) . None the less, it’s an inspiration to see an informed man , although too snobby to want to ride a bus, speak truth to the rioters ,policy makers , the biased press who spin the truth making out that the  rioters are predominantly  black,   : the truth is an inspiration, let’s get to work, but remember u.k. healthcare is free, housing for all is subsidized by the govt. for decades after art school,  I agree with most of what he is saying but still feel  If  brits could spend a year living in the U.S. they would lose their lunch over how greedy our representatives are , how bullish our cops that abuse  their power can be, how many blacks are in jail, how few jobs there  are since globalization opened up slave labor in the far east,  and  they would go running back to the Uk for their great humanitarian benefits alone. And that’s all i’ll say on the riots- Lady kier

As he confronts the sheeple blocking the emergency lane ,Gavgav27 brings me faith in human kindness and concern during times of utter greed ,selfishness, and  misplaced anger.( Vancouver sports riots, London flat tv screen riots)    Please , we the peeps, let’s follow his example and “do unto others as we would like them to do to us” . Blow that whistle, mate. Hero of the day. - Lady Kier

p.s. in the U.s. people have cause to riot against racist cops with guns and tazers…over here our jails actually are filled with 99% black men and women…..but  for all those in the U.S. that think London coppers are the same…trust….after living there for 9 years in both hackney , just south of brixton in tulse hill , a short time in greendwood and ladbroke grove,-  these are not racial riots or against police brutality….it’s wreckless youth without a cause  wanting to grab material things while cops who are only allowed to have guns with rubber bullets are ill -prepared  because they are not infiltrated with dominant bully power-hungry cops  like we have in the U.S. I knowthere are good cops in the U.S but when the bad ones  get to stay on the force or get a mere slap on the wrist it eventually creates riots with a purpose.

NOW look wot these idiots did. They burned downed a warehouse housing over 150 independant record labels which  housed the entire inventory of PIAS UK, burning  all inventory from the following labels:  XL/Beggars, Warp, Rough Trade, Domino, 4AD, S…

RECORD SHOPPING IN MY SLEEP

in 1997, I  was living in London and  one thing i loved the most about that country was PIRATE RADIO stations. On any given night there was up to 10 stations playing music programmed by fans and bedroom DJs pumping out commercial free music non-stop .  I slept next to the radio every night  falling asleep to the latest Garage, or Broken beat  mixes  and when a great song came on I  would lucidly press play on my tape recorder while still  asleep. The next day was like unwrapping chistmas presents because i was never sure what i’d find but always excited when I’d rewind the tape and listen back .Then I’d go to the record stores ( remember them?) , play them the little bit off my walkman and they’d tell me who it was.  Anyway….the best song ever to be discovered while record shopping in my sleep was  GABRIEL. Peven Everett’s positive yet haunting voice still lifts my spirits to this day and when the horns come in ..I still get chills . Roy Davis Jr. produced the track  and this song has been a staple  thruout the years . It was a turning point for music track as many felt  it  started the “two-step” sound which was  refreshing as drum n bass had  become a dickwaiving cliche with little soul, great MC’s like Cleveland Watkiss were delegated to live only gigs but not recorded for fear of giving up publishing B.S. ( thanks Goldie)  ,and lost it’s sense of humor, much like heavy metal  distorted rock n roll  with it’s hardness , as happens to every thriving new musical genre after about 10-15 years into it . This song was a much needed return to love and good times . in it?

OTHER things I loved about living in London was that free health care for everybody really worked ( even though the brits complained -they never knew how good they had it-greener grass) , there were very few homeless ( compared to the U.S. and usually by choice if any )  , no sign of grimey ghettos , poverty yes but the govt provides the basics like housing and  healthcare.  ( nothing close to  the ghetto wastelands across the  U.S. in nearly every cities SE side ) London is a music loving city and as someone once said-“theyr’e the librarians of every culture”.  After 10 years I moved back to the US thinking Bush was about to be voted out  his second term. My heart sank as I arrived on voting day only to witness he stole another rigged election. The countrywas stillin shock and awe under the propaghanda storm created by republican owned mainstream news networks and radio. It’s  songs like this that will always be there to help us through such difficult times. -Lady Kier

If we’re going to riot in the streets  atleast we should use google earth to find and climb over the walls of the gated communities of the banksters homes or BP’s and haliburtons CEOs homes, and rob them back, go Egypt on them.   I understand one young man with a gun ( all guns are illegal in the UK )   in Hackney ( where i  lived for 3 years )  was killed by a cop ,  but if the brits only knew how sensible and fair their police are compared to the U.S. (who dont weed out the bad cops ) 9 years of living in London and I only saw one bad cop abuse their power , where as in the US I’ve seen it hundreds of times  in LA, and NYC when I moved to the lower east side in 1982, crownheights in 1997, williamsburgh in 1984. An undercover cop put a gun to my head because he was blocking a one way street in an unidentified car and told me to “back the fuck up” ( my car) I finally backed up and gave him a healthy NY salute ( the middle finger) to which he left his mission and promptly turned on me. !!! But this riot is embarrassing because it’s so senseless …. … and in Vancouver…over a sports game result? .how embarrassing..rebels without a cause…in times when there is so much to actually REALLY riot for. .people acting out in idiot mobs for no reason ….however the girl who threw the first brick at a cop may have been an agent provacature ( my paranoid mind always at work.)  to make a real cause appear to be about  causing more senseless violence . why burn down a bus ? your public transport ? or throw bricks at fireman? i never underestimate the stupidity of an angry mob.  When i was mugged  in London it never occured  to me to call the cops but my friend convinced me to. I was shocked at how helpful and concerned behaved. When my house was robbed by the infamous thug who lived across the street from me on Romola road  in Tulse hill ,the cops left a nice note on my door . who you gonna call…ghostbusters? - Lady Kier

thanks to Maha for sending me this lil’ clip of my DJ set in Montreal for Diver-city. it was about 110 degrees and  unfortunatly the breeze didnt hit until sundown, just as I played my last song…but considering the heat, the crowd atleast clapped and some  really threw down  and put their whole body into it- it was SEVERE      : )
