ELECTRIC SPANKING OF WAR BABIES-  a p-funk classic

pronounced with a the UMPTY      he’s spunky

tomorrow night:   Thursday aug 26th NYC

The Hole is pleased to present BOY, an exhibition by Cody Critcheloe and his band SSION. The exhibition includes video, painting, drawing, and installation and will fea- ture special guests Peggy Noland and Jaimie Warren. The sum of these parts could be called “Kansas City Gone Wild”: these artists are all part of an exciting new energy coming from this city and we want to show New Yorkers this big mess in the Midwest!

Cody Critcheloe is the mad mustachioed front man and creative ringleader of SSION: a band pro- nounced SHUN like the word PERCUSSION and FASHION and EXPLOSION. SSION is a collaborative confluence of creative kids in Kansas City. This queer punk performance art band just came out with BOY, a feature length movie documenting Cody’s life as a small town punk kid addicted to junk food dreaming of stardom who becomes a glamorous pop star with the help and hindrance of a gaggle of crazy dames. Archly witty and abounding and self-aware parody and pop-cultural collage, this film composites various music videos Cody made for SSION songs from 2007-2009 and links them together with mockumentary interviews, tour footage and cultural critique. Shitty green screen and hand- made painted cardboard props abound, as do hot fags, hot dance moves, and smoking hot costumes by Peggy Noland.

Peggy! She is a fashion designer on the verge. Her outrageous spandex concoctions put her on the map a few years ago outfitting bands CSS and Tilly and the Wall; she once sent me some apple print scratch and sniff leggings that really smelled. She has a shop in Kansas City that she does a com- pletely different crazy fashion/sculpture installation every few months and she will be building a pop up shop for the show.

I met Peggy a couple of years ago through Jaimie Warren, or “Madonna” in the SSION movie: she takes self-portraits looking and being weird that cut right to the heart of being young and bored and making your own fun in America. She co-runs a TV and community development show called Whoop Dee Doo that is another organizing element in the Kansas City creative community that includes Peggy and Cody and a whole lot more.

Cody will be installing his exhibition like a sweet hangout zone and video lounge. Peggy will have a fashion boutique in the front and Jaimie will have a photo installation in the showroom. SSION will do a one-night blowout performance in September and Peggy will present her new spring sportswear during Fashion Week. Stay tuned for details!

NEW AFRICA LIVE: presents BIBI TANGA and The Selenites in NYC. I have never seen a man tap dance  while singing AND playing a deep funky bass at all let alone the way BIBI does it in a james brown tribute to funky drummer. BiBi Tanga  dosn’t need to do covers as his own repertoire which combines central  african rhythms of his roots  with Paris jazz and funk, but he can’t help being humble and kind. And  paying respect is the definition of kindness. When he sings “Say goodbye with a smile” it reminds me how much i love positive soulful music -ever since I heard Sly and the family stone. When Bibi on bass locks into Rico kerridge on guitar it is like a freight train of funk that is transporting all the goodies of nessesity. The drummer was tighter than tight itself that tight couldn’t slip out of time if it tried.  National Geographic  has a record label and snatched him up -because they been around the world a few times and know what’s up.- lady Kier

When Cindy Wilson sings “dance this mess  around” she not only awakens the deepest darkest haunting truth in our inner core, she nails it EVERY time and that spirit starts dancing strange new steps I’ve never seen before and can never remember how to do again. And she did it to me again! on thursday nite at Coney Island. When Kate Pierson  sings it makes me feel that I am  swinging upside down in a musical beatnik party in Paris snapping my fingers . like…I am there man….right inthe middle of the most happening  party on mother earth..like…a party in a fluorescent volcano with swimming mermaids  offering electric coolaid.  She has the best growl in her voice that can only come from the heart and about 20 inches lower. Then she starts dancing and here come the the chills , but when their voices harmonize like sisters in those melodies that only the b52’s could write I feel  like a kid in kindergarden who is actually learning to skip for the first time. Fred’s poetry and kooky images it brings to mind is a perfect match to the most uplifting dance music I have ever heard . When they played “party out of bounds”  I noticed people dancing out of bounds and a few security cops trying to hold back a near riot the band  created. But sir- we just want to get closer to the B52s! i love that their new music sounds like it was written at the same jam session for when they wrote ‘rock lobster” again just proving they can’t help being authentic. I love their latest album-  thanks marty markowitz

As of January, the supreme court decided corporations can spend AS MUCH AS THEY WANT on elections. It was already out of control and turned our democracy into corprotacracy . But this video gives me hope that organized  people have the power-or I should say the shoppers have the power. on a side note- I love a tuba.  thanks Yvonne and Sergio   for sending this my way.-lady kier

I adore Sharron Jones and the Dap-Kings but I didn’t realize until seeing her in Prospect Park last night that she is EVEN BETTER live than recorded. she’s a small firecracker with a BIG BANG and her duet with Lee Field could wake James Brown from a long slumber. Walking across the park with mr. Ewalt, at times I felt like Scout and Jem. big thanks to Johnny Segan!- lady kier

BLACK DEVIL DISCO CLUB: Bernard Fevre gives me fever.  His music is healing dance floors 1 by 1 across the globe. I was kicking myself for missing his last show at webster hall  6 months ago and when my friend Justice told me he was playing at glasslands -I was determined not to miss this Genious -with a capital G. Glasslands wasn’t known for having a good sound system but boy have they stepped it up. The sound was phenominal and the show was a huge lift up. He sings with the innocence  of a child sometimes a changeling into a  chesire cat. His music challenged us to try and create new dances- which we did. I even got to meet him afterwards.if you are not familiar with this prolific songwriter and producer ,you can hear more of his musical masterpieces here:    http://www.myspace.com/bddcreal

Last nite, a short walk from my new apt in Flatbush @ Wingate Park : Mon. Free shows.  The Ohio Players ( I rep Youngstown  ) played Sweet Sticky thing,Rollercoaster “say what” , Fire , and the Funky Worm come  out  her hole  ) then  P-funk  hit hard with a banging! George Clinton teared thru  2 hours of pure funk.  Bolita Woods, Steve Boyd,Kendra Foster, Kim Manning and all the singers channelled Garry somehow in the most beautiful way . The band was tight and made a  beautiful grey night seem clear and sunny  .They held off the rains under  2 smokestacks  until after their show as if the raindancing they caused brought it on  . Dwayne mixed the h out of the orchestra   and from the back of the Windgate racetrack - we were all  dancing.  Salt n pepper will be there next monday night.
